In The Ring — Chicago Kickboxing & Muay Thai Smoker 2026

Muay Thai Celebrated through Generations

In May 2026, Chicago Kickboxing & Muay Thai hosted their semi-annual Smoker competition. A Smoker is an opportunity for aspiring fighters to get their first taste of in-ring experience. Most competitors have zero to three fights under their belt. As you can imagine, nerves run high.

They say less than 1% of Muay Thai practitioners worldwide ever step into a ring for a judged fight. Even at the amateur level, this is a big moment. Walking down to the ring knowing you're about to punch someone in the face — and that someone is about to punch you back — is something training can prepare you for but never fully replicate.

These fighters put in three to four hard months of preparation for this day. You're in the ring for six minutes max, but it feels like a lifetime.

Before the fights begin there are the weigh-ins, where the men and women meet their opponents for the first time. Depending on how the matchups fall, you might end up fighting a teammate. Or worse — after months of training, you might not get matched at all. That's a hard lesson, but it happens at every level of this sport, from amateur to professional.

The room filled with close to 100 people — cheering, rooting, fully invested. Margaritas and cold beer set the tone. Over 20 fights happened that day.

There is something inspiring about watching people do something hard, something that genuinely scares them. Seeing someone face their fear in real time is powerful. It's hard not to feel charged up for your own life when you witness it.

I've trained at CMT since 2019. I came to this gym in search of a change in my life — I didn't want to fight. I just wanted to get in shape. But when you share that space with people striving to be their best, a question starts to creep into your mind: "Could I actually do this?"

And here's what makes it really exciting — we may be watching the beginning of a future champion. Not just in the ring, but in life.
